E-Learning Day

E-Learning day was a chance to get out other the classroom and do WHATEVER I WANT... As long as it was related to science (dammit xP)

The Day
I went into London with one of my classmates, and we visited the Hunterian Museum where we saw some pretty cool things:
A Rat- Surgeons used to use animals to see
what embryos would look like
... and their insides >__<

The museum contained many things like this, embryos from animals and humans. Also old surgical equipment which was very different to what we use now. There was also a video on heart surgery that we watched, it was all interesting.

We also visited the Science Museum, which was very nostalgic, just for a bit of fun :) they say it's just for kids and I beg to differ!

The purpose of E-Learning day was to learn through another way rather than sitting in college, we used Facebook to share what we found with everyone else, we were going to use a video app called Oovoo but that didn't work out.

Today I learnt that, in the past they had "unethical" ways of carrying out surgery and discovering more about humans, but without their methods, we wouldn't be as developed as we are today.

So thanks for that Hunterian Museum ^__^

Making it in Medicine Challege - A Trip to GSK

On the 6th November 2012, I visited the GlaxoSmithKline Bioscience Catalyst centre in Stevenage, this was where the Made in Medicine challenge took place.

The day
On arrival to the GSK building, I was greeted by very friendly staff who told me where to go, then a room full of Year 9 students that we were to mentor in the Made in Medicine task they were partaking in.

Their task was to create a drug for a disease they have chosen and then present it to the rest of the students and the GSK staff there. If only I was offered something this fun to do in year 9!

The year 9 students, though young, were very friendly and willing to accept help, I went around the room introducing myself and offering help where they need it.

During lunch, I was able to meet people from other companies, for example the women from the RSC who were doing a cornstarch and water demo (funny link :D), they told me about their company and the work experience they offer. Also a man from the company Eisai in Hatfield, they are linked with the Japanese and do research and development, he also offered work experience.

Reflection
The day itself was not only informative, but fun and it was liberating to assist students of a younger age, relate to them and even learn things from them too. It was nice to know that this generation has still got hope~! Visiting GSK gave me connections to other companies and to the GSK company itself, I plan to go back and hopefully partake in work experience there.
To improve, I could have spoken to more students, and to more of the staff there just to gain more from the experience
However I think I did well on communicating to the people from the other companies what I wanted out of this experience and what I wanted to do in the future.

All in all, it was a day well spent :)

Personal Development: The beginning

Dear Journal :D

Recently I have started to receive assignments from my different subjects, and in attempting them I have realised how different this course is to A-level.

I have been introduced to referencing, report writing etc... which is something I need to get used to.

I have done a SWOT analysis which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats... through that I deduced...

STRENGTHS:

  • Note taking- mostly visual aids
  • Presentation building
  • Enthusiastic
  • Perseverance

WEAKNESSES:

  • Time management
  • Organisation
  • Easily distracted
  • Can't easily make decisions

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Doing this course I can gain more contacts for biomed
  • More independence -> more space to grow
  • Given a second chance to better my grades and get into a good uni course

THREATS:

  • This course may not get me to exactly where I want to be
  • Distractions from leisure
  • Work load, and not enough time to do it all -> only 1 year
Finally, my hopes for the oncoming week is to work at my best ability at the given assignments and get them in by the deadline so I'm not left behind, and to develop myself as a person by undergoing more things to do with my future.

Bye Journal, till next time ^___^
